Since travel plans are on hold and I can’t make it down to St. John anytime soon, I recorded an audio yoga class + meditation with Sweatnet Charlotte as though ...we’re at Cinnamon Bay on a beautiful Caribbean day. Grab your headphones, roll out your mat, close your eyes, and I’ll paint a picture of my favorite place on earth. Class is 40 minutes, practice is gentle and grounding. https://sweatnet.com//40-minute-yoga-flow-on-st-johns-bea/
A few weeks ago my friend Sanskrit Revolution - Illuminating the Language, Culture & History of Yoga sent me an article about what psychologists call moral rebels people who are willing to defend their principles in the face of potentially negative social consequences such as disapproval, ostracism and career setbacks. They speak up and call out potentially harmful behavior in all types of situations, even if even if doing so may have costs. I personally know some bada...ss moral rebels. When they speak truth, we witness courage in action. Their fierceness comes from a place of love, empathy and compassion for those who are being harmed. They push back, even if they are the only voice, even if they’re not sure their voice is powerful enough to make a difference. What if we could all be moral rebels? When you feel that burning in your belly, when you witness something that you know is wrong, can you stand up to social pressure and find the courage to speak up? There are two driving forces in this world: love and fear. Don’t let your fear keep you silent anymore. Push back and call out as an act of love. XX See more
EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT! Hundreds of people have showed up to Rebby Kern Yoga’s workshops on Race, Bias & Gender over the last year. Each time I join, I leave... with more knowledge, more questions, and always wishing the workshop was longer. Rebby is a phenomenal facilitator. They have the gift of holding honest, real, raw space for everyone who is willing to show up to do this work. It’s hard to put into words how much I’ve learned from them over the last year. It’s a gift just to be in their presence and when they start dropping knowledge and weaving it into their own lived experiences, it creates a shift. They are what I believe to be a true change agent, and you have the opportunity to spend an entire weekend learning from them. Yoga teachers: now is the time. We need you in this fight. I miss being together in yoga spaces. And I also know that yoga isn’t something that can be contained within four walls. Living yoga has always been important to me. This practice shifted the way I view the world, the way I see others, the way I see myself. It helped me understand that it’s all interconnected. There is one thing we can all agree on right now: these are challenging times. AND these are powerful times. Things are shifting, transforming, evolving. The definitio...n of yoga we often hear is, ‘to unify, to yoke, to connect.’ But I keep coming back to these: ‘the movement from one point to another, higher one’ & ‘action with undivided uninterrupted attention.’ We have to stay in the flow. We have to stay focused, to keep moving forward. We have to be brave enough to evolve and strong enough to change our minds as we gather new information. I believe in you, I believe in us. Anyone can give up, it’s the easiest thing in the world to do. But to hold it together when everyone else would understand if you fell apart, that’s true strength. The purpose of the #BlackLivesMatter movement isn’t to exclude anyone. Yes, of course all human lives matter. But this is about the black lives being violently taken by people who are supposed to protect them. It’s important to understand that saying all lives matter silences black people. Even if you understand this, I encourage you to take a minute to watch @nicheculturedflow, one of the best storytellers I know, explain this in a way that may be helpful for your own understanding and/or to give you tools to explain this to other white folx who still just don’t get it.

A theme in our Rocket Yoga practice that we always come back to is a quote from Larry Schultz, who developed the sequences: You’re stronger than you think you are. It’s become somewhat of a mantra for me over these last few weeks. I have to constantly remind myself that we don’t know what we’re capable of until we try. Also, practice and repetition helps because humans are adaptable and resilient. We’re also creative. We were born to evolve. Two months ago, when I was under... the covers crying with headphones on listening to guided meditations in the middle of the afternoon, terrified and just trying to get through the day - if you’d asked me if I can let go of everything I’d planned and completely start over and lead virtual classes and trainings and connect with new and old friends from all over and continue to build community, I would’ve said no. But look at us now, my friends. It’s not easy, but we’re doing this. Some days are harder than others but we’re getting through and creating the new. Adjusting and adapting. We are, in fact, so much stronger than we think we are. Regulating your body and nervous system through practices like this can help pull us out of the sympathetic fight/flight/freeze state many of us find ourselves in during stressful times. The full breathing and quietness helps us elicit the relaxation response, a neurological response that tells us we are safe. If you’ve been having trouble sleeping lately, this may help you get some rest tonight. No yoga experience is needed. You don’t even need a yoga mat, just couch cushions, pillows and blankets. To register, send an email to [email protected] with ‘Restorative Yoga’ in the subject and I’ll send you the Zoom info.
